Beach Walk

Calvi 1972.

Sun-kissed salty skin.

A stroll along the ocean. Feet sink into the sand. Waves brush the skin. The sun at its zenith radiates the beach. ‘Beach Walk’ evokes the memory of a summer day.

Fresh as the spray of the ocean, bergamot, lemon and pink pepper are instantly fused. Radiant and sensual ylang ylang follows, illuminating the addictive scents of coconut milk, musk and heliotrope. “Once united, these three notes create an accord with an almost maternal softness”, says Jacques Cavallier. Unctuous odours that reveal just a hint of saltiness.

Flower Market

Paris 2011.

Crisp petal freshness.

Freshly cut flowers, wet petals, buckets and vases brimming with water, leaves crushed on the floor, a multitude of floral compositions... Maison Martin Margiela captures the delicate fragrance of the flower market. The green freshness of just-cut stems echoes the sensuality of the floral accord. Transparent notes of freesia and Grasse rose petals dotted with water, are enveloped by creamier notes of Sambac jasmine and tuberose.

“It is a bouquet of textures”, explains Jacques Cavallier. “A harmony where no flower overpowers another and beneath which one detects a touch of cedar and moss.” Like a walk through a flower market, nature is at once raw and refined.

Lazy Sunday Morning.

Florence 2003.

Soft skin and bed linen.

Silky-smooth skin, crumpled linen sheets and the reassuring scent of fresh laundry. A heavy, enveloping floral fragrance, with notes of lily of the valley and patchouli in its purest form, melt together into a white abyss. A festival of white and creamy musk, lifted by an aldehyde note boosting the sensation of freshly washed laundry, dried-out in the blazing sunshine.

“In the beginning, there was colour: white - luminous, virginal, immaculate. That was my challenge: how to convey the sensations of a colour in a scent.” Givaudan perfumer-designer Louise Turner experienced this overwhelming whiteness from her hotel in Florence, with a view over the Boboli Gardens. She wanted to translate the consistency of this pure colour and the sheet of bright light veiling her skin, to bring a sense of luminous freshness and a white floral embrace, to generate notions of well-being and serenity. With ‘Lazy Sunday Morning’, time stands still, leaving only memories and sensations.

Jazz Club

Brooklyn 2013.

Heady cocktails and cigars.

‘Jazz Club’ is woody, oriental, sweet and intoxicating. A rich score, with a fresh vibrato at the start and a trio of pink peppercorns, citrus and neroli. Its rum notes play with orange and bitter orange, enriched with sage. A balmy base scent, styrax is added to vanilla, tonka bean, vetiver, and tobacco leaves, lending an overall melody of leather and liquor.

“What an incredible presence these New York jazz clubs have! Melting pots of masculine scents, as exhilarating as the aroma of cigars, leather, whisky and rum… To illustrate this ambiance, I used a rum cocktail, vetiver, tobacco leaves and a vanilla pod” says Aliénor Massenet, a perfumer-designer at IFF, who created the first masculine ‘Replica’ fragrance.

At the Barber’s

Madrid 1992.

Shaving and leathery notes.

Louise Turner, perfume creator at Givaudan, plunged into the clean, fresh atmosphere of a barbershop. Inspired by the savoir-faire of barbers, this fragrance represents a carefully orchestrated ballet of gestures. The initial stimulating surge of basil and lavender is warmed by gentle notes of tonka beans and white musk. ‘At the Barber’s’ is a unique interpretation of fern, leaving subtle leathery and woody scents in its wake.

“I was inspired by the memory of my father getting ready in the morning. The aromatic notes of lavender mixed with the smell of soap bubbles in the gentle warmth of the bathroom.   I worked with lavender for its clean and aromatic freshness, transforming the scent with almond-like notes of tonka bean. A harmony of comforting white musks gave life to this quintessentially masculine scent, of which my Anglo-Saxon origins make me particularly fond.”

By the Fireplace

Chamonix, 1971.

Burning wood and chestnut.

Day breaks. Outside it is snowing on a frosty, shivery landscape. Inside the flames of a comforting fire crackle in the fireplace. ‘By the Fireplace’ subtly evolves on the skin to offer winter’s hot-cold contrasts, and the comfortable sensation that a cozy fireplace offers in the midst of winter.

Created by perfumer Marie Salamagne, ‘By the Fireplace’ is the ‘Replica’ collection’s first feminine and masculine fragrance. It evokes a morning by the fireplace in Chamonix in the 1970s. Its warm perfume blends smokey woods and grilled chestnuts. The frosted top note contrasts with the warmer heart that mixes chestnut and woodsy accords. The wake is soft, enveloping and addictive.

Sailing Day

Paros, 2001

Aquatic deep sea.

Dive. The deeper you go, the cooler it feels. Swim back to the surface. Open your eyes... The endless sea, infinite blue lies before you. A warm breeze guides the sailing boat towards the horizon. The invigorating memory of a sailing day.

‘Sailing Day’ is a fresh, blue, vivifying fragrance. The aldehyde notes and aquatic accord evoke the embrace of sky and sea. Iris absolute and rose essence connect to smoothen the fragrance, as does the calm seabed. It is then intensified by its base notes of red seaweed, minerals and an ambergris accord, to reach a deep and intense blue.

Music Festival

Woodstock, 1969.

Patchouli and fresh bud.

An electrified crowd dancing to the sound of rock music. Time stops as minds escape to peaceful havens. Now is all that matters. The high is exalting, senses awaken.

‘Music Festival’ was elaborated according to the iconic Woodstock plant, patchouli. It reveals the surprising tones of a controverted scent. The fragrance begins with an aromatic high, only to reveal a warm and enveloping heart. The patchouli essence connects with tobacco and incense notes to create a strong addictive accord. Then, notes of cedar wood and cypress deeply wrap the fragrance. The pleasant confusion of senses and minds, in a trance-like olfactory state.

Coffee Break

Stockholm, 2007.

Creamy and cozy coffee.

-

3 pm. The depths of winter. Night is falling in Stockholm. Behind the closed doors of a café are a cosy atmosphere, warm aromas and the taste of simple happiness.

The top note of ‘Coffee Break’ is the scent of rich, smooth coffee. An energetic start which leads to fresh heart notes of Lavender Essence and Green Mint mixed with Orange Blossom Absolute, before giving way to a warm trail. After this invigorating awakening, we are fully enveloped by the scent of rich, creamy, foamy milk with a lightly woody character due to the Sandalwood Essence and Virginian Cedar.

This fragrance complements a range of 12 Eaux de Toilettes, including the iconic ‘Beach Walk’, ‘Jazz Club’ and ‘Lazy Sunday Morning’. A range of universal olfactive memories to revive a multitude of personal stories and recollections.

Under The Lemon Trees

Palermo, 1987.

Relaxing and bright lemon.

‘Under The Lemon Trees’ is a sharp scent composed of an imaginary lemon tree. The head notes combine the freshest and most invigorating scents of citrus. Next come the scents of coriander, Mate absolute and tea leaves sketching the green foliage of the tree. A woody trail, with hints of cedar and white musks, complete the evocation of this Mediterranean symbol including its sinuous bark.

To create ‘Under The Lemon Trees’, Violaine Collas drew inspiration from a personal memory. That of a stroll through a citrus field on a warm summer day. She wanted to recreate these impressions, emotions and scents. ‘Under The Lemon Tree’ is “fresh, sparkling and fizzy”, she explains. “The tea leaves came to complete the lemon tree leaves. The cedar gives a structure to the fragrance and a bark to this imaginary tree”.

Springtime in a Park

Shanghai, 2019.

Blossoms and fruity notes.

Lost in the midst of an urban labyrinth saturated with noise and dust, a garden comes to life. Flowers begin to bloom under the spring sunshine, proffering their delicate palette of colours and smells. An ideal location to pause for breath.

‘Springtime in a Park’ invites the wearer to take an olfactory stroll through subtle aqueous and fruity opening notes such as Pear, Bergamot and Blackcurrant. Harmonious blends of Lily of the Valley, Royal Jasmine and Damask Rose follow, carried by a musky and woody trail which is softened by a light touch of Vanilla.

This fragrance complements a range of 12 Eaux de Toilettes, including the iconic ‘Beach Walk’, ‘Jazz Club’ and ‘Lazy Sunday Morning’. A range of universal olfactive memories to revive a multitude of personal stories and recollections.

Bubble Bath

Beverly Hills, 2005.

'Bubble Bath' envelops you in a soothing cocoon. A Chypre floral, the scent reveals itself with a soap bubble clean accord and Bergamot essence. A Rose super essence, Lavender accord and Jasmine absolu follow, enhanced with relaxing hints of Coconut accord, Patchouli essence and White Musks.
